Quick Troubleshooting

Start here for the most common fixes. These steps solve 90% of issues.

Bubble doesn't appear?

First, check for errors on the `chrome://extensions/` page. Then, click the reload icon for Sidechat and hard-refresh the ChatGPT tab (`Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + R`).

Topic not detecting?

Ensure you type at least 10 characters in the ChatGPT prompt and wait 2-3 seconds. You can open the DevTools console (F12) to see debug messages like "[Content] Topic detected".

Panel looks broken?

This can sometimes be caused by browser zoom. Please ensure your page zoom is set to 100%. A hard refresh can also resolve temporary styling glitches.

Installation & Testing Guide (5 Mins)

  1. Reload Extension: Go to chrome://extensions/, find Sidechat, and click the 🔄 reload icon.
  2. Open & Refresh ChatGPT: Open chat.openai.com and perform a hard refresh (`Cmd+Shift+R` or `Ctrl+F5`). The green bubble should appear.
  3. Test Topic Detection: Type "Write Python code to sort a list" into ChatGPT. Check the DevTools Console (F12) for the message `[Content] Topic detected: coding`.
  4. Test Chat Panel: Click the green bubble. The panel should open. Type a message and press Enter. Your message should appear instantly.
  5. Test Settings: Click the Sidechat icon in your Chrome toolbar. The popup should open, and toggles for notifications and sound should work smoothly.
  6. Test Theme Switching: In ChatGPT's settings, switch between Light and Dark mode. The Sidechat panel should adapt its theme automatically.

Success Checklist

  • ✅ Green chat bubble appears on ChatGPT.
  • ✅ Topic detection messages appear in the console.
  • ✅ Chat panel opens, closes, and sends messages.
  • ✅ Settings toggles in the toolbar popup are responsive.
